Markup vs margin

Markup vs margin for product founders

Last updated: Published by Cydney Mar

Markup is profit divided by cost, margin is profit divided by selling price, so a 30% markup is not a 30% margin.

Product Costing Desk sees this mix-up behind many underpriced first products. Factories and suppliers often quote markup, while retail buyers and investors usually talk margin. The same dollar of profit produces two different percentages, and confusing them can cost a founder most of their profit once a retailer takes its share.

Is 30% markup the same as 30% margin?

No. A 30% markup on a $10 unit gives a $13 price and a margin of about 23.1%. To earn a true 30% margin on that $10 unit, you would need to charge about $14.29. Margin is always the smaller number of the two for the same sale.

What margin is a 50% markup?

A 50% markup is a 33.3% margin. To convert markup to margin, divide the markup by one plus the markup, in decimals: 0.5 / 1.5 = 0.333. To convert margin to markup, divide the margin by one minus the margin: a 40% margin is 0.4 / 0.6 = 66.7% markup, and a 60% margin is a 150% markup.

What common starting markups mean as margins

Online Labels says many businesses start in the 30% to 50% markup range, and that markup may rise to 80%, 100%, or even 200% as a business grows and demand increases. In margin terms, a 30% to 50% markup is 23.1% to 33.3%, while 100% and 200% markups are 50.0% and 66.7% margins.

Why the difference matters when you sell through retailers

A retailer needs its own margin between the wholesale price it pays you and the shelf price customers pay. If you set your wholesale price with a thin markup over cost, there may be nothing left once the retailer's margin is built in, and the shelf price that results may be higher than customers will pay.

Work in margin from the start, ask each buyer which term they use, and check the price you receive against your full landed unit cost. The retail, DTC, and TV pricing guide walks through working back from a shelf price.

Is 30% markup the same as 30% margin?
No. A 30% markup adds 30% of cost to the cost, so a $10 unit sells for $13, which is a margin of about 23.1%. A 30% margin means 30% of the selling price is profit, so the same $10 unit must sell for about $14.29. Margin is always smaller than markup on the same sale.
What margin is a 50% markup?
A 50% markup equals a 33.3% margin. A unit costing $10 marked up 50% sells for $15, and the $5 profit divided by the $15 price is one third. To convert any markup to margin, divide the markup by one plus the markup, using decimals: 0.5 divided by 1.5 equals 0.333.
How do I convert margin to markup?
Divide the margin by one minus the margin, using decimals. A 40% margin becomes 0.4 divided by 0.6, which is a 66.7% markup. A 60% margin becomes a 150% markup. The Product Costing Desk calculator shows both figures side by side, so you can talk to suppliers and buyers in whichever term they use.
What markup should a new product start with?
Online Labels says many businesses start in the 30% to 50% markup range to cover costs while staying competitive, and that markup may rise to 80%, 100%, or even 200% as demand grows. Note that a 30% to 50% markup is only a 23.1% to 33.3% margin, which may not leave room for a retailer.
Why do founders confuse markup and margin?
Both describe the same profit dollars, but markup divides by cost while margin divides by price. Suppliers often speak in markup, while retailers and investors usually speak in margin. Mixing them up can produce a price that looks profitable on paper and loses money once a retailer takes its share of the sale.
